BCS proves yet again to be BS

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

The BCS has been under fire for years, for good reason, and 2008 is no different. Heck, even the President-Elect Barack Obama has mentioned “throwing his weight around” to see about an 8-team college football playoff. But the BCS, referred to as the “B.S.C.” by Joe Paterno earlier this season, hit a new low on Sunday in my opinion. Oklahoma has jumped to #2 in the BCS standings thanks in part to the ESPN USA Today Coaches poll which also has OU ranked #2, ahead of Texas at #3. While the 1-point difference in the teams (Oklahoma 1,397 points to Texas with 1,396 points) is minimal, how the heck do the coaches get off ranking a team with an identical record ahead of a team that beat them during that same season? This is absolutely mind-boggling. On a neutral field, Texas beat Oklahoma 45-35 on October 11th; why this is not the end of the story is unbelievable. For those who argue that OU is the hotter team right now, both teams are 3-0 in their last 3 games and 6-1 in their last 7 with a 11-1 record on the season. Texas’ only loss came AT (BCS #7) Texas Tech, the same team OU crushed at HOME.
